Undergraduate Program
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science
 

The undergraduate major in Computer Science is intended to enable a student to pursue further studies in Computer Science or in related fields of Science, Engineering, and Business and to enter the work force as an entry level computer professional. The program combines a very thorough preparation in the fundamentals of Computer Science and related fields with the opportunity for more advanced work in either Computer Science or Computer Engineering.

Objectives: The educational objectives of the Program are as follows:

  • To develop students’ understanding of the concepts and theories of Computer Science.

  • To prepare students for graduate study and research and/or entry into the work force as computer professionals.

  • To engage faculty and students in meaningful research.

  • To promote professional development and growth of faculty.

  • To offer computer literacy and introductory Computer Science courses to non-computer science majors.
     

Student Outcomes: Graduates of the Computer Science Department should be able to:

  • Demonstrate professional competency in: (1) Programming Fundamentals; (2) Computer Organization, Architecture, Networks, and Operating Systems; and (3) Algorithms, Theory, and Computational Mathematics.

  • Analyze, design, implement and present a computerized solution to a real life problem.

  • Demonstrate professional competency in oral and written communication.

  • Understand social and ethnical issues in computing.

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply, practically, the knowledge and skills of their major field in "real world" situations.

  • Be prepared for graduate study and/or research careers.

Master of Science in Computer Science
 

Objectives: The objectives of the Department of Computer Science are:

  • To afford students the opportunity for in-depth study of Computer
    science concepts and theories.

  • To keep abreast of, and expose students to, state-of-the-art, as well
    as state-of-the-practice, computer applications and technologies.

  • To engage faculty and students in meaningful computer science research, and computer science applications research and development.

  • To promote professional development and growth of students and
    faculty.

The Masters program in computer science at Jackson State University is currently evolving to meet the needs of the diverse population in the surrounding urban area. The curriculum can be geared to:

  1. Provide training for those preparing to enter fields where a substantial working knowledge of computers is required,

  2. Provide additional training to people already working in the field, and/or

  3. Prepare students for study at the doctoral level.

The Computer Science department is housed in the John A. Peoples Science Building in Room 237 (2nd Floor)
