The Margaret Walker Center for the Study of the African-American Experience at Jackson State University welcomes Charlayne Hunter-Gault as the keynote speaker for the 45th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Birthday Convocation. With more than 40 years in the journalism industry, Charlayne Hunter-Gault has worked with all forms of media, including stints at NPR, PBS, CNN and The New York Times. Over the years, Hunter-Gault has received numerous awards and citations including two Emmy Awards and three Peabody Awards. In August 2005, she was inducted in the National Association of Black Journalists’ Hall of Fame and holds some three dozen honorary degrees. She is on the board of the Carter Center, the Peabody Awards, and the Committee to Protect Journalists and is co-chair of the African Media Initiative, a project aimed at promoting the highest ethical standards and business practices as well as quality journalism on the African continent. She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Platanos and Collard Greens

Based on David Lamb’s novel Do Platanos Go Wit’ Collard Greens?, this hilarious tale of love, family drama and politics explores the relationship between African Americans and Latinos in New York City. The play, which centers around two college students, opened at a small Off-Broadway theater in 2003. That same year it began what is now an annual tour to American colleges and universities.
