About the BBER
The BBER was established
in 1985 and provides research support, maintenance of various databases,
and publication of current research, often utilizing business school
students to assist in conducting research completing surveys, updating
databases and compiling directories. As part of its normal functions,
the Bureau conducts surveys on issues of importance to the business
community and public agencies in the State. Many of the reports and
research have been used in the state’s long range economic development
plan, and as a basis for strategic planning and decision making on
many issues. The BBER also conducts a series of workshops, technical
assistance seminars and computer workshops for staff.
The educational
goal for the BBER is to provide research support to individuals in
government, business and industry who are seeking solutions to problems
of concern to the urban community. As part of its normal functions,
the BBER conducts studies on issues of importance to business and public
agencies, both locally and nationally.
In keeping with the
mission of the College of Business, the BBER seeks to: (1) assist and
encourage faculty members to develop and submit proposals for funding,
(2) write and submit proposals for funding to support the BBER research
interests, (3) become the state wide focal point for all research on
minority economic development, and (4) strengthen the College of Business’s
publication program.
The BBER implemented
several activities to increase the research and scholarly work of the
College of Business faculty. Research activities have increased through
the number of funded proposals, and journal articles submitted and
published. One example of work published is the Business and Economic
Review (The Review). The Review is a refereed journal which relates
to the urban mission of JSU and dealt with the traditional emphasis
on the problems of disadvantaged segments of the population. This regional
journal, published annually since 1985, is of economic affairs which
provide a national presence for the College of Business. For more information
about this journal, please contact the editor, Dr. Gail Grass Fulgham
or Ms. Cathy Turner, editorial coordinator at 601-979-2794.
