The Faculty Scholars Center

The Faculty Scholars Center is a comprehensive program of faculty development that nurtures a cadre of teacher scholars and increases efficiency in teaching, research, and service. The center provides training in innovative instructional strategies; intensive orientation and mentoring of junior faculty; training on web-based instruction and other technology applications; release time for sabbaticals; and research, curriculum development and travel grants.The Faculty Scholars Center is one of six activities sponsored by the Academic Division which reports to Dr. Velvelyn Foster, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Mary D. Coleman, Assistant Dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Professor of Political Science, directs the Center.

Staff Development Center

The Staff Development Center provides customer service, personal and professional development training, and technical training in the operation of computer-based administrative management systems, and related activities through workshops, seminars and special sessions. This Center operates through the Office of Human Resources which is directed by Ms. Sandra Sellers. Mrs. Brenda Stewart is Center Coordinator.

Intensive and Accelerated Research Program

The Intensive and Accelerated Research Program strengthens the critical thinking, research, writing, and public speaking skills of first and second year students. Emphases are placed on honor students. The program offers a series of innovative mini courses during the summer sessions and provides unique access to cultural and enhancement activities.The Intensive and Accelerated Research Program is one of six activities sponsored by the Academic Division which reports to Dr. Velvelyn Foster, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Program is directed by Dr. Maria A. Harvey who serves as Dean of the W.E.B. DuBois Honors College.

Advisement, Assessment and Curriculum Enhancement Program

The Advisement, Assessment and Curriculum Enhancement Program provides comprehensive assessment and advisement services by assisting students in successfully matriculating through the core curriculum and increasing retention. It provides appropriate placement, specialized academic instruction, academic support, and learning communities.The Advisement, Assessment and Curriculum Enhancement Program is one of six activities sponsored by the Academic Division which reports to Dr. Velvelyn Foster, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Program is directed by Dr. Evelyn Leggette who serves as Dean of the Division of Undergraduate Studies.

Personal Development and Self-Assessment Center

The Personal Development and Self-Assessment Center provides professional development training for students. The major areas of focus include leadership style identification, time management, residential living, study skills development, motivation, delegation, group dynamics, strategic planning, personality type assessments, and values assessment. The Personal Development and Self-Assessment Center is one of six activities sponsored by the Academic Division which reports to Dr. Velvelyn Foster, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. It is housed in the Division of Student Life where Mr. Larry Belron serves as Acting Vice Provost. Mr. Edwin Quinn directs the Center.

Richard Wright Center for the Written Word

The Richard Wright Center for the Written Word provides daily support services for students who need assistance and encouragement in completing writing assignments and the development of required writing and research portfolios. The center also provides services to faculty and staff who desire feedback on their writing and research projects.The Richard Wright Center for the Written Word is one of six activities sponsored by the Academic Division which reports to Dr. Velvelyn Foster, Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. It is housed in the Division of Undergraduate Studies. Dr. Evelyn Leggette is Dean and Dr. Brenda Anderson is Center Director.

Center for Service Learning

The Center for Service Learning was designed to strengthen academic learning and enhance civic responsibility through the off campus placement of students in service to the community. Students are required to earn three to six hours of academic credit in local, national, or international service learning prior to graduation. The program is being phased in over a three-year period.The Center for Service Learning is one of six activities sponsored by the Academic Division which reports to Dr. Velvelyn Foster, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. It is housed in the Division of Student Life where Mr. Larry Belton serves as Acting Vice Provost. Ms. Tracy Thomas directs the Center.

The Student Services Component of Radio Station WJSU

The Student Services Component of Radio Station WJSU provides students with internship experience in radio broadcast communications and technology. They are being trained to use state-of-the-art digital equipment and are allowed to participate in live broadcast events.This activity is directed by Mr. Larry McAdoo. He serves as Manager of Radio Station WJSU.

TV Digital Technology Training for Students

TV Digital Technology Training for Students is a program coordinated through Jackson State University's TV23 television station. It provides students with internship experiences in television broadcast communications and technology. Students are participating in the selection of state-of-the-art digital television operation equipment and are being trained on its use. Additionally, students are being taught to develop documentaries on the "New Digital Age" that will be televised.This activity is directed by Mrs. Judy Alsobrooks Meredith. She serves as Manager of Jackson State University's television station (TV23).

Knowledge Management

The Knowledge Management activity is creating an institutional climate at Jackson State University that promotes the sharing of valuable knowledge by establishing repositories of applicable knowledge and best practices. They are available to users throughout the institution.This activity is directed by Dr. Debra Buchanan. She serves as the V.P. for Assessment, Planning and Knowledge Management.

Acquisition of Equipment

The Acquisition of Equipment activity was responsible for converting of the University’s software system from its current mainframe platform to a newer technology-based server platform. Specifically, the activity will convert the SCTPLUS product to the SCTBanner System. This system will improve the University’s administrative, academic, fiscal, alumni, and knowledge management processes.The activity continues to improve the Banner Symtem, upgrade software, and train faculty, administrators, support staff and students.This activity is directed by Dr. Willie G. Brown. He serves as Vice President for Information Management.

Institutional Development

The Institutional Development activity is strengthening the infrastructure of the Division of Institutional Advancement and University Communication. It allows there offices to implement strategies that will enhance and build the overall development of the University. The grant provides for professional development and training for staff and the purchase software in support these divisions' effort to identify additional sources of institutional support.The activity is directed by Ms. Evangeline Robinson director of Institutional Advancement and Mr. Anthony Dean director of the office of University Communications.

The Core Curriculum and Academic Leadership activity provides training for academic leaders, supports additional core curriculum faculty, and a sponsors of student service activities through the Office of Academic Affairs. This activity is directed by Dr. Vevelyn Foster. She serves as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The University Endowment activity allows for the continuation of endowment building efforts by providing the University an opportunity to match a portion of its Institutional Aid Grant for endowment purposes. The Vice President for Business and Finance, Ms. Lillian F. Frierson, is responsible for this activity.

The Margaret Walker Alexander National Research Center develops oral histories for Jackson State University. These histories are essential in the preparation of all students as they advance through the core curriculum, pursue academic majors, and undertake related careers. This activity is directed by Dr. Alferdteen Harrison.

Master Degree Program in Sport Management

The Masters Program in Sports Management provides training for professionals in Sports Management and related studies. Upon completion of the Masters degree, these individuals are qualified to service middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities, and the private sector. The activity is directed by Dr. Hill Williams, Jr., who serves as Chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation
