Welcome Message

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Jackson State University is the best kept secret in the nation for being one of the most published Chemistry Departments in the southern United States with over 6 peer-reviewed articles per faculty per year. We offer excellent education programs and training opportunities for a diverse student body.

The Department offers BS, MS, and PhD degree programs with 20 outstanding faculty members. The BS degree program is certified by the American Chemical Society with several career options: biomedical science, environmental science, forensic science, pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-pharmacy, and pre-engineering. Over 70% of our graduates have been accepted by graduate and professional schools.

As one of the three PhD degree granting Chemistry Departments among the nation’s 115 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), we strive to build the best PhD program in the country that fosters a culture and environment conducive for under-represented monitories, especially African Americans, to become leading scientists in chemical sciences and related fields. Our program has strong computational chemistry, nanomaterials science, and biomedical research built upon traditional areas of chemistry: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and chemical toxicology.

We offer various training programs that provide scholarships, fellowships, internships, etc. for our students.
