About Civil Engineering

Did you know that more Civil Engineers establish their own engineering companies than any other engineering discipline? This is because Civil Engineers serve people in providing their basic needs in every town, city and metropolitan area in the country and the world.

Did you know that Civil Engineers received more salary increases than any other profession during the last three years? This is partly due to the high demand for all types of civil engineering.
Did you know that more Civil Engineers are registered Professional Engineers than are those of any other engineering discipline? This is because civil engineers are "people-serving" professionals and hence responsible and accountable to the public for the quality of their engineering, planning, design, construction and operation efforts.

Did you know that Civil Engineering is an excellent engineering discipline for an individual who wishes to have a dual degree, such as CE/law, CE/business? Again, this is because Civil Engineering is a people-oriented profession.

Did you know that there is less professional "burnout", loss of interest in one's work, for Civil Engineers than for any other engineering disciplines? This is due to the great diversity and variety of the work in which Civil Engineers engage.

Did you know that Civil Engineering is considered to be one of the "big three" engineering disciplines? The other two are Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Did you know that Civil Engineering deals with highly sophisticated computer modeling? In fact, one of the most powerful numerical modeling/analysis method available to any engineer today - the finite element method - was pioneered by civil engineers.

Did you know that Civil Engineering is the broadest engineering discipline? It involves such areas as the design of spacecrafts, bridges, dams, highways, railways, airports, harbors, pipelines, water and wastewater systems, earthquake resistant design, computer modeling, infrastructure maintenance and many other technical challenges..

Did you know that only 1.4 percent of the work force in this country is engineers? This translates to 1.6 million engineers and represents a very select group.
Did you know that Money Magazine rated "Civil Engineering" among the top ten careers in terms of salary, prestige, job satisfaction, and job stability?

The Civil Engineering curriculum at JSU offers two concentrations: “General Civil Engineering” and “Environmental Engineering”. General Civil Engineering is designed for students who desire a broad knowledge of the field of civil engineering. The Environmental Engineering concentration is intended for students who are more interested in Environmental Engineering as a career. As one of the nation's newest departments of Civil Engineering, we are open and committed to an innovative engineering education which incorporates high quality research as an integral part of our education program.
