Project Summary

This project is designed for mathematics and biology students or other science students with interest in mathematics or biology who are interested in the application of mathematics to biology.  Qualified students will be selected to take courses designed to strengthen the mathematical knowledge and skills of biology majors, and increase the ability of mathematics majors to use their quantitative skills to solve biological problems. They will also participate in a five-week summer intensive research at JSU under the supervision of a mentor.  Finally, students will take part in collaborative research work at JSU during the academic year under the supervision of faculty teams from biology and mathematics departments. This interdisciplinary training of students will focus on the application of mathematics to biological phenomena. However, students will have opportunities to conduct research in various areas of biology and applied mathematics.

Who May Apply?  The program is open to sophomores and juniors in biology and mathematics departments, or other science disciplines with interest in math or biology. Students will receive $4,800 as stipend during the academic year and $1,600 allowance during the summer research period at JSU.

Duration of the Program:  Selected students are required to participate in the whole program for a minimum of 2 years even when financial support is ended.

Program is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)
