Center Abstract

The RCMI-Center for Environmental Health at Jackson State University (JSU) funded by the National Institutes of Health has evolved as a "Center of Excellence" in biomedical research. Since its inception in July 1998, the primary goal of the Center has been to develop and sustain an adequate biomedical research infrastructure, and to provide an excellent opportunity to strengthen biomedical programs at JSU. It has provided a focus and necessary resources to maximize biomedical and health-related research and training, and has significantly contributed to the recent ranking of JSU as a comprehensive, research institution according to Carnegie classification. The Center supports five multi-user core research facilities equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for necessary cutting edge research and training in the specific area of biomedical sciences. Between July 1, 2004 and May 31, 2008, all these facilities including the Analytical Core, Moleuclar and Cellular Biology Core, Animal Research Core, Molecular Magnetic Resonance Core, and Biostatistical Support Unit, have continued to be operational. Faculty and students conducting research in these laboratories have published papers in peer-reviewed journals and made presentations at national and international conferences. The number of junior faculty who serve as RCMI investigators has increased substantially due to the successful submission of a supplemental faculty development proposal to NIH/NCRR. Leverage from the RCMI program has also helped in the faculty development by the faculty of other successful extramural proposals. A significant number of both undergraduates and graduate students up to the Ph.D. level have been recruited to participate in the RCMI-supported research. Developmental activities during this period included the organization of workshops on craftsmanship and the tenure and promotion process, and seminars conducted by experts in specific areas of biomedical research.
