The principle focus of the
education component of the NDCIEM is to develop
educational curricula focused on natural disasters that
will serve as a firm and enduring foundation for
producing the next generation of highly educated,
creative and innovative researchers to help solve the
existing and future DHS challenges relating to natural
disasters in coastal areas. In order to successfully
carry out this education objective, projects that
stimulate interest in NDCIEM research at the K-12 levels
are a necessary complement to undergraduate and graduate
education initiatives. The K-12 efforts include a
Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
competition, summer workshops for high school students,
summer internships for high school teachers, and visits
to high schools by faculty to promote NDCIEM challenges
and present some accomplishments of the CENTER. |
