Applied Mathematical Sciences

The Applied Mathematical Sciences Research Cluster is geared towards the advancement of mathematics in the sub-cluster areas of Biomathematics, Applied Partial and Ordinary Differential Equations, Financial Mathematics, Operator Theory and Cryptography, Mathematics Education, and Symmetry Analysis of Differential Equations. Throughout history, these areas have both stimulated and benefited from advances in the range of mathematical sciences. These observations should not obscure the profound scientific challenges posed by these areas on mathematical findings. The combination of intellectual challenge and practical application, together with the distinction of the faculty group engaging in the discovery of new frontiers at the interface of mathematics and application, helps to explain the value of the research undertaken here.

Cluster Objectives

The mathematics interests of the cluster covers a wide range of interesting contemporary areas of mathematics stretching from modeling to computational simulations of biological, physical, and informational phenomenal often enriched by the inquest in the existence and uniqueness results of the ensuing equations. Motivating applications include modern problems from human physiological disorders, mathematical biology, bio-image reconstruction and processing, cryptography, as well as classical problems from physics and engineering. Ongoing research includes computational modeling to analyze integrative biological function in terms of underlying structure and molecular mechanisms (the IUPS Human Physiome Project), mathematical models of the evolution and dynamics of aneurysms, thin-film theory and image analysis, prostheses dynamical analysis, public key crypto-analysis, operator theory and cryptography, population dynamics, biomathematics, quantum theory and infinite dimensional dynamical systems, symmetry analysis of differential equations.
