Undergraduate
and Graduate Program Overview
The Department of Physics, Atmospheric Sciences and Geocience
offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics, Meteorology, several
3/2 engineering options, and several concentrations in Physics. A 3/2
engineering option requires the student to complete three years of study
in Physics at Jackson State University and two years at a participating
engineering school. After completing the requirements at both institutions,
the student would receive a B.S. in Physics and a B.S. in Engineering.
A small student to faculty ratio in the Department provides students
more individual attention from instructors. The research conducted in
Physics include activities in High Energy Physics, Mathematical Physics,
Chaos, Atomic and Chemical Physics, Astronomy, Theoretcial Astrophysics,
Solid State Physics, Theoretical and Experimental Plasma Physics, Computational
Physics, Theoretical and Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, Statistical
Physics, Theory of Atomic Clusters, Molecular Dynamics Simulations of
Finite Systems, Hyperfine Interactions, and Dynamic Exchange Effects
between solids and iron probes.
The Department's
also offers for credit graduate science education and science content
courses for graduate students of other programs. Several courses are
offered for inservice teachers and other educators for professional
development. These courses are often used toward certification and further
degrees.
The Department's
graduate faculty participates in the School of Science and Technology's
Ph.D. program in Environmental Science.
