Summary of Accomplishments

The RCMI project has provided the focus and the necessary resources to maximize research in environmental health at JSU. The project has helped foster and enhance the research infrastructure capability, thus increasing the competitive capability of the faculty in the CSET in general. The total number of technicians in the CSET is 18, which reflects an increase of 67% since the establishment of the RCMI-Center for Environmental Health. Similarly, the total number of research associates currently is 12, an increase of 58%. Among the various centers and laboratories, the number of Post-Doctoral Research Associates has increased to 15.

A number of related centers have been funded by various agencies in part due to the availability and accessibility of the multi-user research core facilities established from the RCMI funding. In addition, the Center researchers have attracted a record number of visiting scientists from this country and abroad.

The Environmental Science Ph.D. program was established in 1992 but it only gained momentum when the RCMI program started at JSU. We have graduated twenty Ph.D. students, all of whom are gainfully employed in academia, government, or industry. Currently, twenty-two students are enrolled. The Ph.D. program in Chemistry was implemented three years ago. Twelve students are currently enrolled.
