SST Highlights

The School of Science & Technology (SST) is an outstanding place to study, develop lifelong learning skills, and achieve exciting academic career goals. It is a place where the thirst for scientific knowledge and problem solving fuels our desire for becoming one of the best schools of science and technology in the world. We are strongly committed to educating students who must become competitive S&T leaders of the 21st century. This innovative spirit is inspiring a new generation of scientists and technologists, while catapulting the SST into the elite group of excellent S&T schools. The following testimony reflects our dear commitment to be the “focus of science and technology education in the United States and the global community”.

  • Our Air Force ROTC is one of 144 programs established at 993 institutions in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Additionally, Jackson State University is the only HBCU hosting an AFROTC detachment in Mississippi.

  •

  • Our Biology Department ranks No. 2 in the nation in the production of African Americans (AA) with BS degrees in biological and biomedical sciences, and No.1 in the production of AA with MS degrees. In recent years, there has also been a significant increase in the number of publications (3.1 per faculty per year).

  •

  • Our Chemistry Department ranks No. 1 among over 100 chemistry departments in the Southeastern of the U.S., with regard to the number of publications per faculty (5.6 publications per faculty in 2007, according to the American Chemical Society). We are also making a major effort to become a leading producer of African American Ph.Ds in chemistry.

  •

  • Our Mathematics Department competes well with other math departments in the State in terms of the ratios of graduates to enrollment numbers. It also ranks among the top 100 departments in terms of the National Science Foundation’s funding.

  •

  • Our Physics, Atmospheric Sciences and Geosciences Department has been the only one at an HBCU institution offering a BS degree in meteorology (from 2000 to 2005, 12 out of the 45 degrees awarded to African Americans were from JSU).

  •

  • Our Technology Department ranks among the top producers of African American graduates with BS degrees in industrial technology.

  •

  • Our multidisciplinary Environmental Science Ph.D. Program is a leading producer of African Americans who earn doctoral degrees in environmental science. Since its inception in 1994, the program has produced 36 graduates, all of whom have obtained rewarding environmental science-related jobs in academia, government agencies and the booming environmental industry.

  •

  • Our faculty conducts outstanding research and publishes in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Several faculty members serve as chief editors of prestigious international journals, and as members of relevant scientific review panels and boards.

  •

  • Several research centers, multi-user core research facilities, and collaborative relationships have been established to promote cutting-edge research and capacity building.
