Proposals to offer existing courses via distance education must be submitted to the Distance Learning Advisory Council for approval. Syllabi for online courses, with the appropriate signed DL forms, must be submitted to the chair of the council. The department chair’s signature on the form indicates that the course has met the requirements set forth by the University’s traditional course approval procedures (e.g., University Undergraduate Curriculum Committee). Once the course is approved, the faculty member initiates the process of getting course materials online.
New course approval is initiated by submitting the course syllabus with signed approval forms to the appropriate traditional course approval body. The DL course action and proposal forms must also be included at this time. Once the course has been approved through traditional processes, it will be forwarded to the council. After the course gains approval of the council, access to Blackboard software can be gained by contacting the assistant director of distance learning. Courses that require students to take examinations or receive credit in lieu of attendance via Blackboard are designated as “hybrid” courses. Approval of these courses is gained by submitting a syllabus for the course including activities that will occur online with the appropriate signed distance learning course approval and proposal forms. Additionally, if any 3 of the following course elements are distributed via Blackboard, the course must gain council approval:
- Assignments
- Quizzes
- Papers
- Chat sessions or
- Email Communications
Please submit the following forms:
- Course Action Form (see example)
- Course Proposal Form
- Course Syllabus – Download the Distance Learning Course Syllabus Template and format your current syllabus to meet the requirements for the CDLIT.
