The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Jackson State University began in 1998. It offers the State of Mississippi's only graduate programs in this field. Jackson State University is a historically Black, Co-educational, research- intensive public institution of higher learning that is designated by the State Board of Trustees as the Urban Institution for Mississippi. The University is located in the State's Capital, Jackson, Mississippi and largest Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) of over 520,000 people with multiple local jurisdictions. The MSA is the center of federal and state administration area, and the hub of business industry, medical research, and cultural amenities.
Degrees offered by the Department included the Doctor of Philosophy in Urban and Regional Planning, the Masters of Arts in Urban and Regional Planning and the Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies. The Department is committed to effectively serving students from diverse academic, economic, ethnic, social, geographic backgrounds and to developing leaders who are capable and willing to seek solutions to human, social and technological problems, with special emphasis on those that are relevant to the metropolitan and urban regions of the nation.
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning has great students and alumni. Our graduates and students are making positive contributions to the planning profession and improving the quality of life.
