FCM Construction Update

You may have noticed lots of progress being made on the new School of Engineering building, located at the campus entrance on J.R. Lynch Street.   Construction officially started in 2015 with a groundbreaking ceremony held June 18th. This two-story, 24,000 square-foot structure will house engineering classrooms, laboratories, CSET, and other administrative offices.

So far, hundreds of thousands of man hours have been spent constructing this state-of-the-art facility. Brickwork began the week of February 1st and the final stages of roofing are being completed. We anticipate completion and full operations to begin by the Fall 2016 semester.

For alumni, administrators, faculty, staff and students; it’s truly exciting to watch the growth of our institution. The Department of Facilities and Construction Management’s (FCM) mission is to support and contribute to Jackson State University’s distinguished educational environment. Planning, designing, engineering, and constructing facilities that are aesthetically appealing and efficient are some of our major objectives. As we continue our efforts to provide stimulating working and learning environment, we hope that you enjoy and take pride in your school. We also want to ensure your safety as this construction project progresses.

For all those who pass by to attend classes or events, remember this is an active construction site. For your safety, always:

  1. Walk on designated walkways and sidewalks.
  2. Pay attention to signs posted and cross the street at crosswalk areas.
  3. If possible avoid work areas and stay away from construction equipment.
  4. Maintain a safe distance away from moving construction equipment such as trucks.
  5. Try not to use your cell phone; little distractions can easily cause an incident.
  6. Utilize online tools that keep you updated on traffic alerts. FCM’s website provides links that give details on construction happening around campus, allowing you to plan your routes according.
