The Division of International Studies warmly welcomes you to the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Summer Orientation Program on the scenic campus of Jackson State University, August 8-12, 2009.   We have hosted Foreign Language Teaching Assistants for the past four (4) years and look forward to orienting you to academic and cultural life in the United States.

Founded in 1877, Jackson State University (JSU), Mississippi's urban university has a particular sensitivity to social, economic and environmental dimensions of societal development.  The Division of International Studies has hosted programs of this nature for more than a decade through its varied components: International Visitor’s Center of Jackson, English as a Second Language Institute and the Mississippi Consortium for International Development.  Through these units, the Division of International Studies has hosted over 1000 programs designed to facilitate the globalization of higher education and the state of Mississippi and other countries.

In accordance with the goals and objectives of the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program, Jackson State University will facilitate an orientation program designed to enhance your knowledge of the cultures and customs of the U.S., as well as introducing you to teaching techniques and best practices for teaching a foreign language to Americans. Moreover, JSU will provide instructions in curriculum development, teaching techniques as well as showcasing the rich diverse cultural history of Mississippi through museums, music, food and other cultural characteristics of the Deep South.

Again, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the Summer Orientation Program and provide you with a plethora of information you need to become a successful FLTA.

Sincerely,

Patricia Jernigan, Ph. D.
