Fulbright – Engage the World

International Studies warmly welcomes you to the Fulbright Gateway Orientation Program and congratulates you on being chosen as a Fulbrighter.  We are honored to have been chosen to help you begin this exciting time in your life.

Founded in 1877, Jackson State University (JSU), Mississippi’s urban university has a particular sensitivity to social, economic and environmental dimensions of societal development.  International Studies has hosted programs of this nature for more than a decade through its varied components: International Visitor’s Center of Jackson, English as a Second Language Institute and the Mississippi Consortium for International Development.  Through these units, International Studies has hosted over 1000 programs designed to facilitate the globalization of higher education and the state of Mississippi and other countries.

This orientation program will provide you an understanding of your role and responsibilities as a Fulbrighter and assist you in developing skills for a successful academic, personal and professional life in the U.S.

Upon arrival in Jackson, you will be met by the JSU project team and transported to the campus where you will reside in Campbell Suites Dormitory.  We will hold a very brief orientation on the arrival day and provide meals for you.  We realize that Ramadan season is upon us, special arrangements have been made for those who wish to observe.

While in Jackson, we will provide a full program, both professional and cultural.  The first day of the program will include a detailed orientation session.  Academic sessions during the next three days will cover Understanding U.S. Academic Culture, Appropriate Interpersonal Relations, Group Discussions with current Fulbright students, Adjusting to U.S. Culture and Avoiding Culture Shock, Health and Wellness, the Accident and Sickness Program, U.S. Politics and People, Leadership, Fulbright Goals and Identity and Team Building.  The complete agenda may be found on this website. This website has information on Fulbright, IIE, your program, Mississippi, and other useful materials.  During and after the orientation, we will post any handouts and presentation materials which you may access later.

If you have any special requests or needs, please do not hesitate to contact me either before or during the program.

Again, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the Fulbright Gateway Summer Orientation Program and provide you with a plethora of information you need to become a successful Fulbrighter.
