Application for Graduate Degree Candidacy

While there is a variation among graduate programs in the specific graduate degree requirements, all programs have in common:
  • A period of pre-candidacy studies, typically intensive coursework and training in the basic skills of research, scholarship and  professional practice appropriate to the discipline
  • A period of post-candidacy studies in which work is applied toward the completion of final degree requirement.

Admission To Candidacy at the Masters' Level

When approximately 12-15 semester hours have been completed the student should submit an application for advancement to candidacy.  Please note that student cannot be advanced to candidacy until
:
  1. All admission requirements have been met.
  2. All incompletes ("I" grades) have been removed.
  3. Application for Candidacy approved by your departmental committee.
  4. The Graduate English Competency Examination has been passed, or ENG 500 completed with a grade of "B" or higher (Click here for an application) *(pdf file)
  5. Overall GPA is 3.00 or higher.

Required Information
Section 1.
  • Name and ID Number.
  • Address  (form will be mailed to this address).
  • Degree and Major.
  • Semester you plan to graduate.
  • Indicate the semester GECE or ENG 500 completed.
  • Plan of Study (Thesis, Project or Extra Coursework Options)
Section 2. If you are completing a Thesis or Project, you must form your committee. The committee must approve your research proposal.
  • Approval/Signatures of the members of your committee.
Section 3. Certification and Recommendation of the Department/Program and College.
  • Approval/Signatures of:  Your advisor, Department Chair, and College Dean
  • Note: Your advisor must attach a current degree audit.
Section 4. Acceptance for the Graduate Council.
