Graduate English Competency Examination. (The GECE)

This examination is usually taken during the first semester when the student begins work beyond the undergraduate level. 
It is designed to show the strengths and weaknesses of each student in the area of grammar and usage, logic, organization,
and content.  Students unsuccessful on the GECE must pass English 500.

Eligibility
  •  A first-time master's student in their first semester of enrollmment.
  •  Or, a currently enrolled student with a GPA> 3.0 and no incomplete (I) grades.
  • The student must be registered for at least one credit hour in the semester which the examination will be given.  An audited course will not meet this requirement.
What to bring to the exam......
  1. No. 2 pencils for the multiple choice section.
  2. Blue or black ink pens for the written section.
  3. A pocket dictionary
  4. "Blue Book", available in the JSU Bookstore.
  5. Photo ID, for example a JSU Supercard or Driver's License.

1.  Please complete the form and have your advisor sign the form. Use this opportunity to confer with your advisor.
2.  Your advisor will verify your GPA is >3.0 and there are no incomplete (I) grades.
3. Take the application to the Business Office and pay the testing fee which covers the cost of the examination.
4.  Return the completed application to the Division of Graduate Studies on or before the deadline date specified in the Graduate Calendar. (click here for deadline dates)
5. When the Dean of the Division of Graduate Studies declares you eligible for the Examination, YOU WILL RECEIVE A LETTER at the address you put on the form.



Policies and Procedures
  1. Students may not take the exam as a walk-in.
  2. Students who miss the registration deadline must apply to take the examination at the next scheduled date.
  3. Student failing to take the examination on the date, must re-apply by the deadline on a subsequent test date.
  4. Students may attempt the examination only once.
  5. Students unsuccessful on the examination must complete ENGLISH 500 with a grade of "B" or better.
  6. Students will not be declared eligible for the Graduate Area Comprehensive Examination (GACE) until this requirement is met.
