Testing, Placement & Curriculum

A placement test is administered to new ESL students on Thursday the week before the first week of clases. Testing helps place the students at the appropriate ESL level based on the results. The Written Placement Test is a multiple choice 50-minute test with 70 questions to assess proficiency in listening, reading, and language use. The Placement Conversation is a 10-minute oral interview to assess the speaking ability. Writing assessment will be conducted if necessary.

Curriculum

ESLI’s curriculum consists of both skill-based and content-based courses that specifically tailor students’ needs of English proficiency and knowledge and skill aptitudes to up-bound to their future academic programs:

(1) Beginner (ESL 100 level) courses include Introduction to English Written Application; Introduction to English Communications; English Pronunciation; English Grammar;

(2) Upper beginner level (ESL 200 level) courses include Reading and Written Application; English Communications; English Pronunciation; English Grammar;

(3)  Intermediate and upper intermediate level (ESL 300 level) courses include Reading and Written Application; English Communications; English Pronunciation; Extensive Reading;  English Grammar;

(4) Lower advanced level (ESL 400 level) course include Reading and Written Application; English Communications; English Grammar; Extensive Reading;  Academic Writing;  iBT-TOEFL Reading; iBT-TOEFL Listening; iBT-TOEFL Speaking; and iBT-TOEFL Writing;

(5) Advanced level (ESL 500 level) courses include Reading and Written Application; English Communications; Advanced Grammar; iBT-TOEFL Reading; iBT-TOEFL Listening; iBT-TOEFL Speaking; and iBT-TOEFL Writing.
