A popular good weather hang-out for the student body, the Gibbs-Green Plaza, or Plaza for short, is a large, multi-level brick and concrete patio-like structure that blocks off J. R. Lynch Street and links Alexander Hall to the University Green. The plaza is the site of many outdoor dances, concerts, Greek shows and other events throughout the year. It is especially active during homecoming, when the homecoming festival and other events are held on its various levels. - more -

Located in the center of the university green, the Centennial Monument is the repository of the Centennial Capsule -- a time capsule containing memorabilia of the university's first century. The capsule is to be opened on the university's bicentennial in 2077. - more -

Ayer Hall is the oldest building at Jackson State University. Constructed in 1903 as the first academic building on the then Jackson College Campus, the building has served as college library, dormitory, classroom and administrative office space. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Currently, Ayer Hall is undergoing massive renovation. When the dust settles and the last craftsman has put away his tools, the building will become the home of the Margaret Walker Alexander National Research Center for the Study of the 20th Century African American, a museum and archival center devoted to the study of 20th century African-American history.
