The Department of Historyand Philosophy requires at least 30 hours ofHistory in addition to History of Civilization.  There is nomaximum number of history hours.

Required Courses include:
  • HIST 201 and 202 - United States History
  • HIST 211 and 212 - Survey of Europe or 6 hoursin European History
  • HIST 344 and 447 - Historiography &Research Seminar (must be taken be taken in sequence and each coursewill only be offered once annually)
  • Additionally, 18 hours of Social Sciencecourses are required.
For B.A. majors interested inteacher certification in Social Science forthe State of Mississippi, the Department strongly recommends thealternative route to state certification.  Under this program,students will follow the standard B.A. curriculum except that HIST 325 - Mississippi History becomes a requirement and students will take 39 hours of social science instead of 18 hours in Social Science Courses.

The courses should be distributed as follows:
  • PS 335 - American Government and one otherpolitical science course.
  • SOC 214 - Introduction to Sociology and oneother sociology course.
  • ECO 211 - Principles of Macroeconomics
  • ECO 212 - Principles of Microeconomics
  • PSY 305 - Adolescent Psychology
  • PSY 306 - Educational Psychology
  • PSY 307 - Measurement and Evaluation
  • Any two Geography Courses
  • Any two elective courses from the areas of political science, sociology, economics, geography, and psychology
