Research Interests

Dr. Valerie A. Purry, originally from Oakland, California has been residing in Brandon, Mississippi for the past eighteen years.  Dr. Purry has been employed at Jackson State University (JSU) since 1998.  She has served in several offices at JSU as Secretary in the Department of Communicative Disorders, the former Ombudsman office, Dr. Lackey, as well as the Summer National Youth Sports Program, as well as in the Department of History and Philosophy since 2002. She adjuncts in the Department of Criminal Justice and Sociology and the Undergraduate Division course University Success.  She attended Cal State University Hayward and majored in Criminal Justice Administration for three years. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice concentration in Juvenile Justice and a Master of Arts degree in Criminology from JSU. Valerie earned a doctorate in Urban and Regional Planning with a concentration in Community Development and Housing at JSU.  Mrs. Purry is an advocate and mentor for women who were formerly incarcerated.
