Institute for Multimodal Transportation Summit 2009

December 13th, 2012 by webmaster

Thirty-one pre-college students participated in the IMTrans Summit 2009, which was held on March 11 in the MS E-Center Convention Hall.

The goal was to create awareness about multimodal transportation among diverse groups of pre-college students and to equip them with the relevant knowledge regarding transportation issues. The possibility of pursuing a Bachelor degree in the area of transportation at Jackson State University or elsewhere was explored. The summit also served as a venue for exchanging ideas and disseminating information on current and future issues, challenges and demands pertaining to transportation.

Those in attendance represented Jim Hill High School and Bailey Magnet High School. IMTrans staff and facilitators kept participants focused with interesting lectures. Topics ranged from future workforce to factors influencing freight movement and supply. Students were sensitized about study options, specifically in the field of Civil/Transportation Engineering and Urban and Regional Planning at Jackson State University.

Students showcasing their transportation models

Activities involved group discussions and games but the highlight of the summit was the construction of a transportation model, using various materials such as cardboard, string, glue and popsicle sticks. The students truly showcased their creativity and innovative spirit but most of all their understanding about transportation issues. Among the invited were Professor Feng Wang from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Professor Hui- Ru Shih from the Department of Technology, and Mr. Ed Collins, Director of National Center for Biodefense Communications.

Transportation Workshops for Teachers (TWT)

P.I.: Dr. Pamela Heard
Director JSU/NASA Educator Resource Center
Jackson State University

The emphasis on student achievement has place accountability on teacher education programs to produce highly qualified teacher education candidates. As states try to raise the quality of teachers, they must also deal with the fact that qualified teachers are becoming harder to find. Because all of today’s teachers are expected to retire in the next ten years, there are less qualified and licensed science, mathematics, and technology teachers. It is even more difficult to recruit these teachers. The need for programs like the JSU Transportation Workshops for Teachers ( TWT) program is to help with engaging students in math and science so they will be prepared and excited about teaching our next generation of students. This program will engage teachers on how to use data to support instructional decisions.
