NASA and Jackson State University have a continuing partnership dedicated to research and education. On March 13, 2009, the NASA/Educator Resource Center organized a campus tour for students from Nichols Middle School in Canton, Mississippi.
The purpose of the tour was to expose 6th grade students to real life research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM disciplines).
IMTrans staff took advantage of the opportunity to host the students and facilitated the day-long event in which 200 students participated.
Altogether, IMTrans hosted eight groups for 20 minutes each. The presentation featured the goals and objectives of IMTrans and touched upon the basics of transportation. Students were encouraged to put on their thinking caps as one of their games was to list and discuss the numerous ways people get around.
Students were introduced to IMTrans, learned about the institute, actively participated in discussions and activities and seemed evidently enthusiastic to learn more about transportation.
