Enhancing Transportation Education through Real-World Design Projects

Dr. Yadong Li, Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Jackson State University

Through a partnership with Michael Baker, Jr., Inc., a Civil Engineering consulting firm, and MDOT, JSU Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering Capstone Design instructor Dr. Yadong Li is poised to enhance the education of transportation to Civil Engineering students through real-life transportation projects for the Capstone Design class. A three-party joint meeting has been held at the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, JSU on May 22, 2009 to initiate the program and a follow-up meeting between Michael Baker engineers and Dr. Yadong Li was held on July 16, 2009. Three potential real-world projects have been identified for the 2009-2010 Capstone Design class. Michael Baker engineers are committed to assisting JSU Civil Engineering senior students in their design process.

Through negotiation, the owner of the design software MicroStation, Bentley Systems Inc., has offered JSU Civil Engineering free license to use MicroStation for up to 200 computer seats. The software is an important tool for the design of transportation projects
