Canton Community Health Advisors Network

The Canton Community Health Advisors Network (CHAN) was the first group in the tri-county area of Hinds, Madison, and Rankin counties to become organized by the Jackson Heart Study Community Partnership Office as a Community Health Advisors Network.  Shortly after their inauguration, members of the Canton Chan completed the Community Health Advisor 10 week training class. That initial class graduated over 15 residents from the Canton community. Even though some of the foundation members of that class are no longer around, the hometown legacy built by these pioneers of community health continues to thrive and contribute to the well-being of the community residents. The Canton Community Health Advisors have become a well-known group in the community. Other community organizations like 100 Black Men of Canton, Diabetes Foundation of MS, MS Tobacco Free Coalition Madison, My Brother’s Keeper, ROSS (Resident Opportunities and Supportive Services) and MadCAAP (Madison Counties Allied Against Poverty) along with Canton Park and Recreation and The Canton Fire Department have joined in partnership with the Canton CHAN to help make the Canton Community more health conscious. The Canton CHAN host and participate in health walks and mini health fairs, and disseminate heart health literature to community churches, civic organizations, public housing, and schools. The goal is to help improve individual, family, and community health by making the community aware of different risk factors that are associated with heart disease, like blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity.

The Canton CHAN meet every 2nd Monday of the month, no meetings in June or July. For more information regarding the Canton CHAN or how you can become a member, call Mr. Marty Fortenberry at 601-979-8736 or Ms. Bobbie Jones, President at 601-966-1323.
