Dr. Andrea Wright Dilworth began her journalism career at U.S. News & World Report in Washington, D.C., where she was a reporter. While in D.C., she also freelanced for Essence magazine.
After joining her husband in Jackson, Miss., she became a features writer for The Clarion-Ledger, the state’s largest newspaper.
A member of the Mass Communications faculty since 1998, Dilworth teaches courses primarily in print journalism and serves as coordinator of both advisement and the alumni newsletter. She is also co-advisor to the JSU Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).
Dilworth continues to work as a journalist. She is a freelance health writer for The Clarion-Ledger. In the past, she was Media Coordinator for Jubilee! JAM, an annual music and arts festival in Jackson.
She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award, Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism, National Easter Seal Society EDI Award, Educational Press Association of America Award and Benjamin Fine Journalism Award.
Dilworth earned her Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Jackson State University, M.A. in Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia and B.A. in English/Journalism from Tougaloo College. Her primary research interests are journalism education and leadership.
She and her husband, Melvin P. Dilworth, Sr., are the proud parents of three children: Melvin Jr., Matthew and Morgan.
