Dr. David N. Ware, Associate Professor of Music and Assistant Director of Bands at Jackson State University (Jackson, MS), directs the Jazz Ensemble II, Brasswind Ensemble, and Trumpet Ensemble. He holds the degrees Doctor of Music (Florida State University), Master of Music Performance and the Performer’s Certificate (Eastman School of Music), and Bachelor of Music (University of Wyoming). A soloist, chamber, jazz musician, clinician, and recipient of numerous scholarships including the American Symphony Orchestra League Scholarship, the Wynton Marsalis Scholarship (Eastern Music Festival), and International Trumpet Guild conference scholarships, Ware has performed with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Memphis Chamber Orchestra, Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony Orchestra, and the Walt Disney All-American College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Ron McCurdy.
Dr. Ware has articles that have been published in the Jazz Education Journal, the International Trumpet Guild Journal and the School Band and Orchestra Magazine. His method books Flexibility Studies for Brass Instruments has been released by Cimarron Music Press in Ledyard, CT (www.cimarronmusic.com) and his new book, The Attitudes & Opinions of Band Directors at Select Historically Black Colleges & Universities: A Study of Philosophies, Methodologies & Pedagogy will be released by Edwin Mellen Press in the Summer of 2008. Dr. Ware was recently named a University Scholar for 2008 – 2009 and will conduct research on the numerous Mississippi Delta Blues legends who migrated to Chicago, IL from circa 1945 to 1960. The research will culminate in a book tentatively titled Headhunters and Wolfmen: The Chicago Blues Convergence.
Ware’s professional affiliations include the National Association of African American Studies, the International Association for Jazz Education, the International Trumpet Guild, Music Educators National Conference, the National Association for the Study and Performance of African-American Music, and Pi Kappa Lambda National Honorary Music Fraternity. Dr. Ware’s research interests include problem-based learning in music education and music for trumpet ensembles.
