City College of the City University of New York Office: 405 College of Liberal Arts Building Adams-Johnson is a native of Mississippi . After attending Jackson Public schools , she did undergraduate studies at Tougaloo College . She later moved to New York City where she completed her undergraduate studies at Queens College of the City University graduating with honors in poetry. She received a Master of Creative Writing from City College of the City University of New York where she began her teaching at the college level as a graduate student, subsequently becoming an Instructor of English. In 1999, Mrs. Johnson relocated back home to her native Mississippi . She began teaching at JSU in 2002, bringing with her a diverse background and a broad range of teaching experiences that she gained from her years of teaching at City College and other institutions of Higher Learning in the Tri-State Areas. Mrs. Johnson is a noted poet, fiction writer, and playwright. Adams-Johnson's poetry has appeared in various literary journals: “A Love Supreme,” Poetry in Performance 20, City College, 1992 “Poem for Daddy Sugahboy,” Poetry in Performance 19, City College, 1991 “For the Tenants of 600 Howard Ave,” Catalyst Magazine, 1991 “Maw-Maw,” Catalyst Magazine, 1990. In 1886, at the First Annual Black Writer Conference of New York, she was one of the first to receive the John Oliver Killens Fiction Award, for excerpts from her memoir, Daughter of the Whirlwinds . Since her return to Jackson , Mrs. Johnson has read and performed her poetry and produced her play, From Africa to America . As a writing and language arts consultant dedicated to the creation and promotion of literacy and literature, she facilitates the Write On Writers Guild (founded by her), and conducts creative writing workshops for various organizations around the Jackson Metro area. Most recently, the Mississippi Arts Commission recommended her for an artist fellowship for her collections of short stories No Turning Back . Currently, she is working on a collection of short stories, No Turning Back (a working title), a memoir, Daughter of the Whirlwinds , and a chapbook of poetry (untitled). Additionally, she works closely with other colleagues to institutionalize A Margaret Walker Festival, An International Interdisciplinary Conference , at JSU. RECENT COURSES TAUGHT: World Literature
