Marsha WalkerInstructor of English M.A., English, University of Iowa Office: 413 College of Liberal Arts Building
A native of Newton, MS, I joined
the EMFL faculty in the fall of 2003. My undergraduate studies—a consortium of English, education (secondary
English teacher licensure), and foreign language (minor in Spanish and
MS teacher licensure)—have proven to be the foundation for subsequent
career interests and objectives. The formal teacher training I have received
along with my own personality quirks and ever-abounding spirit has allowed
me to use the classroom as my personal “stomping ground.” Pedagogically,
I approach classroom situations as the facilitator of the constant exchange
of ideas and artistic expression. I thrive off of the energy and personalities
of my students.
As a graduate student, my research focused primarily on 20 th century American and African-American literature. While I still engage ardent inquiries regarding gender constructions and religiosity as espoused in 20 th century texts, particularly African-American works, I most recently have developed research interests in the convergences of science and literature. Having taught a Literature of Science course in the spring of 2004, I have a new awareness of science as well as a new outlook on my own profession. The reciprocal endeavor of employing the literary and the scientific—two traditionally opposed genres—to appropriate cultural values is both mind-boggling and exhilarating. In addition to these interests, I find time for professional writing and graphic design consultation, singing, painting, and shopping. RECENT COURSES TAUGHT:
