The Department of Mass Communication at Jackson State University prepares students to be practitioners of Mass Communication in the areas of multimedia journalism, media production, and integrated marketing communication. The department is committed to providing both theoretical/research based and hands-on instruction to both undergraduate and graduate students. Students must follow and complete an accredited curriculum (ACEJMC) sequence where students take core courses, e.g., introduction to mass communication to media ethics leading to a capstone internship along with media heavy electives including photography, media graphics, video and web production.
Our contemporary and rigorous curriculum provides the opportunity for students to develop up-to-date skill-sets applicable in a wide-variety of areas of the media, making the Jackson State Mass Communication experience one of a kind. Our pre-professional Bachelors of Science degree in Mass Communication equips students with the required competencies to succeed in the industry, which is a fact that makes us quite proud.
Along with a historical view of Mass Communication, students learn pragmatically with a number of veterans of the field totaling over 100 years of combined experience. We have former general managers, producers, writers, Pulitzer finalists, and several other “stars of the field” to train you in our body of faculty.
