The Timothy R. Brown Scholarship is open to African-American male undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Mass Communications at Jackson State University. The award is named for 1996 mass communications alumnus, Timothy R. Brown, who worked as a writer and editor for The Associated Press for more than a decade. He held a public affairs position at the University of Texas at Arlington before he passed away in 2010. The award recognizes African-American males who have demonstrated potential in and commitment to the communications field.

 

 

Criteria:

The applicant must:

  • be an African-American male;
  • be a JSU mass communications major;
  • be a sophomore, junior or senior; and
  • possess a minimum 2.0 grade-point average in major.

 

Procedure:

The applicant must:

  • submit one letter of recommendation from a faculty member, civic/community leader, or practicum/internship site supervisor who has personal knowledge of student;
  • submit three work samples (minimum two writing samples such as a published article, broadcast script or class assignment; the third work sample can be a photograph, audio or video); and
  • email recommendation letter and work samples.

Interviews with the top three applicants will be conducted. The scholarship recipient will be recognized at the annual Mass Communications Day celebration.
