Letter to Prospective Students

Dear Prospective Student:

I want to introduce myself and make you familiar with opportunities that may be of interest to your students at Jackson State University as they look for college education.  The Department of Music at Jackson State offers BA, BM, BME and MM degrees with an enrollment of 149 music majors and over twenty graduate students.  Performance opportunities abound with the chorale, wind groups, orchestra, jazz, opera, other chamber ensembles and marching in the Sonic Boom of the South.  We are fortunate to have competitive ensemble-based scholarships for undergraduates and waivers for graduate students.

We work hard to prepare students for careers in the professional world.  Our recent alumni have continued to excel in their fields. Bass Edwin Davis, was featured in 2016 in Mozart’s opera singspiel, Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Mezzo-soprano Gedeane Graham, just completed the Master of Music degree in vocal performance at Michigan State University in spring 2016 and is presently enrolled in the Doctor of Musical Arts degree program at The Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. Briana Sheriff, also a soprano, is enrolled at New York University's Master of Music program with a specialization in Musical Theatre. Byron Chatman and Alona Alexander are completing their Ph.D. degrees in Music Education at The University of Mississippi. These are just examples our recent student success.

I would like to encourage you and your students to visit our website at https://www.jsums.edu/music for more information regarding our music program offerings.  Please feel free to contact me as your students begin or continue their search for college education.  I look forward to working with you in the future!

Sincerely,

Dr. David O. Akombo, B.ED., M.A., M.Mus., Ph.D.
