(JACKSON, Miss.) - Author Terrie Williams will speak during the Fourth Mental Health Research Conference April 7-9 at the Jackson Convention Complex, 105 E. Pascagoula St. in Jackson, Miss.
Sponsored by the Southern Institute for Mental Health Advocacy, Research and Training (SMHART) at Jackson State University's College of Public Service School of Social Work, the three-day conference will focus on the theme, "The Journey to Emotional Well Being: Health, Healing and Recovery."
Williams will sign copies of her book, "Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We're Not Hurting," from 5 - 6:30 p.m. April 7.
A successful public relations professional and social worker, Williams wrote "Black Pain" to recount her own battle with depression and to encourage regular people and celebrities to talk about the effect of mental illness on their lives. The book is filled with untold stories of celebrities including Mike Tyson and Blair Underwood and the experiences of everyday folks. It shows readers how to take steps to end their suffering and/or the suffering within their family. Williams says her mission is for African Americans to freely speak their pain without shame and start healing.
A graduate of Brandeis University, Williams has a master's degree in social work from Columbia University. As a publicist, she has represented prominent African Americans including Eddie Murphy, Miles Davis, Johnnie Cochran and Janet Jackson.
Other conference speakers include King Davis, a professor and the Robert Lee Sutherland Chair in Mental Health and Social Policy at the University of Texas, Austin, School of Social Work; Leon Chestang, associate dean and visiting professor at the Jackson State University School of Social Work;and Dr. Grayson Norquist, professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
