Pentagon official to speak at the JSU AFROTC awards banquet

(JACKSON, Miss.) - Pentagon official Maj. Gen. Darren W. McDew will be the guest speaker at the Jackson State University Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) fourth annual Dining Out ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 24, in the new Student Center on the university's campus, 1400 John R. Lynch St. in Jackson.

McDew serves as the Pentagon's Vice Director for Strategic Plans and Policy in the Joint Staff. Through the Director for Strategic Plans and Policy, he enables the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to provide military advice to the President, the Secretary of Defense and the National Security Council. He is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and a command pilot with more than 3,000 flying hours in a variety of aircraft.

The Jackson State AFROTC annual Dining Out is a major celebration adorned in the tradition of military pageantry. The event provides a formal military setting to recognize the accomplishments of the cadet corps and charge senior cadet leadership to explore greater success. This year the celebration will recognize the top cadet from each high school Junior Army and Air Force ROTC program in the Jackson area.

As one of the Air Force's newest detachments, Jackson State's AFROTC boasts the biggest growth in Mississippi. It commissioned its first two U.S. Air Force second lieutenants in May 2008, followed by its first pilot candidate in March. The program has provided more than $250,000 in scholarships to cadets at Jackson State University, Belhaven College, Millsaps College, Mississippi College and Hinds Community College. It also is working to recruit students from Tougaloo College and Holmes Community College.

Tickets for the Dining Out celebration are $25 and can be purchased from a JSU AFROTC cadet or at the AFROTC building at Jackson State University.
