(JACKSON, Miss.) - Jackson State University associate professor of meteorology Heping Liu has won the competitive Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation to support his teaching and research into how land surfaces affect weather and the climate.
The award will provide close to $500,000 over the next five years.
"It's an honor for me," said Liu, who has been teaching at Jackson State since 2004. "I'm just excited."
The National Science Foundation award supports the early career-development activities of teacher-scholars who most effectively integrate research and education within the mission of their institution.
"Through this project, I am also eager to work with our students to motivate them to pursue research in atmospheric sciences," Liu said.
The grant will support Liu's efforts to improve understanding of the exchange processes of radiation, energy and water vapor between the earth's surface and the overlying atmosphere.
"This exchange is governed by very complex, non-linear turbulent processes," he said. "In weather or climate models, however, these processes are quantified using simplified empirical theories, which contribute to some of the uncertainties in weather or climate prediction."
Jackson State University Department of Physics, Atmospheric Science and Geosciences chair Quinton Williams said the award recognizes the high quality of Liu's research.
"It shows the quality and caliber of the faculty we have at Jackson State," Williams said.
Liu is the first faculty member in Jackson State's Department of Physics, Atmospheric Science and Geosciences and one of only a few at the university to receive the National Science Foundation CAREER award.
