Dean Roosevelt O. Shelton, Ph.D.

Dear Prospective Students, Alumni, and Friends:

I am pleased to welcome you to the College of Public Service's Website.  The next few years promise exciting experiences for you as a member of our outstanding campus community. The College is comprised of one school and two departments:  The School of Social Work, the Department of Public Policy and Administration, and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. We offer an array of discipline-specific degrees at the baccalaureate, master, and doctoral levels.  The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Public Administration is among the oldest and most prominent in the country.  Additionally, the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Social Work and the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Urban and Regional Planning are the only degree-granting programs of its kind in the State of Mississippi.

Our professors, administrators, and staff provide a supportive environment that educates students from diverse backgrounds for outstanding professional and innovative leadership roles in their respective disciplines.  Our highly recognized faculty and graduates have the requisite competencies, values, and belief systems that inspire and propel them to make significant contributions toward facilitating a positive transformation in optimal social functioning.

Finally, and perhaps most important, we believe that a college education should ideally prepare students for optimum professional engagements-including careers that we cannot yet envision.  Moreover, we also believe that a college education should do more.  We want every graduate of the College of Public Service to lead a meaningful and rewarding life.  Our future depends on the education of men and women with the capacity to critically think, to tackle challenges from an informed perspective, and to act with contextual understanding.  It is our continued privilege to advance these valuable precepts.
