The Community Health Program (CHP) is a center located in the Department of Psychology.

CHP has three functions:

(1) research
(2) training
(3) community service

The Community Health Program started in 1991 with a single research grant from the National Institute for Mental Health. Since that time, CHP has grown into a research center with four senior scientific staff, a grants manager, support staff, nine full-time research associates and research assistants, and approximately $2,000,000 per year in research funding. Our focus has been on prevention of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) with a variety of vulnerable and underserved groups, including inner city teens, teens in detention centers and drug treatment programs, low income minority women, men and women in prisons and drug treatment facilities, and inner city communities with high rates of syphilis and other STDs. Through our grants, we provide HIV and STD prevention programs and drug relapse prevention programs in underserved communities and to state agencies, such as the Mississippi State Hospital and the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

The Community Health Program also provides research training in health psychology for students in the Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology at Jackson State University. To date, five Ph.D. students have received research training and opportunities, support for minority fellowships, and other financial support from the Community Health Program.
