MSEF Region II FAIR
The Region II Science and Engineering fair includes participants from seven counties in the State of Mississippi (Claiborne, Copiah, Hinds, Jefferson, Madison, Rankin and Warren) and approximately 200 schools (both public and private). The Region II Science and Engineering fair offers students an opportunity to present projects in the areas of mathematics, science and technology.

MATHEMATICS FAIR
The Mathematics Fair was initiated in 1977 by the Jackson State University Department of Mathematics. It is held on the campus of Jackson State University during the month of February.

The Mathematics Fair provides an opportunity for exceptionally talented eleventh and twelfth grade high school students to compete in mathematics contests and to learn of career opportunities for those with a strong mathematics background. The activities of the fair are designed so that the participants will develop a greater appreciation of mathematics and be stimulated to seek a career in mathematics or in a mathematics related area. The Mathematics Fair also attempts to correlate the efforts of high school and college teachers in fulfilling the purpose of teaching and learning mathematics.

Each student participates by taking a competitive written mathematics test and each participating school has the opportunity to enter a team for a mathematics bowl competition. An individual participant may also compete by giving a presentation on a topic in mathematics. Individual and teams are encouraged to set up mathematical displays. In all of the competitive activities, (1st, 2nd, 3rd) winners are awarded certificates or trophies. The judging of the competitive activities is done by faculty in the Department of Mathematics.

The participating high school teachers attend seminars presented by faculty members of the Department of Mathematics and guests.

The student participants benefit from the Mathematics Fair by having the opportunity to meet and interact with mathematicians and professionals in government, industry, and the private sector of work. As a result the students are encouraged to study more mathematics and they are enlightened about the career opportunities in mathematics and related mathematics areas, and the programs of study in college that prepare them for such careers.

For further information on outreach activities,
please call 979-3448 or 979-2153.
