Region II Eligibility (Grades 1-6)
  1. Any student in grades 1-6 or equivalent is eligible.
  2. Schools must be located within Region II. Region II is comprised of: Claiborne, Copiah, Hinds, Jefferson, Madison, Rankin and Warren Counties.
  3. Maximum School Registrations - Participation in any Regional Mississippi Fair is limited to a maximum of 3 entrants per category per class. For a school having grades 1 through 6 the maximum number of science fair entries from that school would be 60 (30 from class 1 and 30 from class 2). 
  4. Preregistration -Preregistration is required for all classes. The on-line registration process must be completed for each participant and the Registration Form must be: (1) printed, (2) signed by the parent and sponsoring teacher, and (3) Received by Region II by 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 17, 2012 along with registration fee. A $12.00 registration fee must be included per participant.
  5. Each student may enter only one project which covers research done during June 2011 - February 2012.
  6. Maximum Size of Display:
    76 cm (30 in deep) 
    122 cm (48 in wide)
    274 cm (108) in height including table
Region II Eligibility (Grades 7-12)

  1. Any student in grades 7-12 or equivalent is eligible, none of whom has reached 21 on or before May 1.
  2. School must be located within Region II. Region II is comprised of: Claiborne, Copiah, Hinds, Jefferson, Madison, Rankin and Warren Counties.
  3. Maximum School Registrations -Participation in any Regional Mississippi Fair is limited to a maximum of 3 projects per category per class. The maximum number of projects for Class 3 (grades 7-8) is 30. The maximum number of projects for Classes 4 (grades 9-10) and 5 (grades 11-12) is 30 per class plus 3 team projects. Region II does not accept team projects for Class 3. Team projects are limited to grades 9-12 only, however, no more than 3 team projects per school may compete. Teams may compete in any of the 10 categories.
  4. Preregistration -Preregistration is required for all classes. The on-line registration process must be completed for each participant and the Registration Form must be: (1) printed, (2) signed by the student, (3) signed by the parent, (4) signed by the sponsoring teacher, and (5) received by Region II by 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 17, 2012. The registration fee for participation is $12.00 per student. Payment in full MUST accompany each participant registration batch. The DEADLINE for receipt of all registrations is 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 17, 2012. Schools must submit ONE school check, cashier's check or money order for registration fees made payable to MSEF-Region II.
  5. Each school must have a Local Scientific Review Committee (SRC) and an Institutional Review Board.
  6. Each student may enter only one project which covers research done during June 2011 - February 2012.
  7. Team projects may have a maximum of three members. Team exhibitors must be in grades 9-12 and must be comprised of students of the same class. Each member must register on-line individually. Team participation is limited to 3 projects per school. At least two of the members must be present for judging.
  8. Maximum Size of Display:

0100 Behavioral & Social Sciences
    Human and animal behavior, social and community relationships--psychology, sociology, anthropology, archaeology, ethology, linguistics, learning, perception, urban, problems, reading problems, public opinion surveys, educational testing, etc.
0200 Biochemistry
    Chemistry of life processes -- molecular biology, molecular genetics, enzymes, photosynthesis, blood chemistry, protein chemistry, food chemistry, hormones, etc.
0300 Botany
    Study of plant life -- agriculture, agronomy, horticulture, forestry, plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant pathology, plant genetics, hydroponics, algae, etc.
0400 Chemistry
    Study of nature and composition of matter and laws governing it--physical chemistry, organic chemistry (other than biochemistry), inorganic chemistry, materials, plastics, fuels, pesticides, metallurgy, soil chemistry, etc.
0500 Earth, Space, & Environmental Sciences
    Earth Science--Geology, minerology, physiography, oceanorgraphy, meteorology, climatology, speleology, seismology, geography, etc.

    Space Science--Astronomy, planetary science, etc.
    Environmental Science--Study of pollution (air, water, and land) sources and their control; echology.
0600 Engineering, Computers, & Math
    Engineering--Technology, projects that directly apply scientific principles to manufacturing and practical uses -- civil, mechanical, aeronautical, chemical, electrical, photographic, sound, automotive, marine, heating and refrigerating, transportation, enviormental engineering, etc.

    Computer Science
    --Study and development of computer hardware, software engineering, internet networking and communications, graphics (including human interface), simulations/virtual reality or computational science (including data structures, encryption, coding and information theory).

    Mathematics--Development of formal logical systems or various numerical and algebraic computations, and the application of these principles -- calculus, geometry, abstract algebra, number theory, statistics, complex analysis, and probability.
0700 Medicine & Health
    Study of diseases and health of humans and animals--dentistry, pharmacology, pathology, ophthalmology, nutrition, sanitation, pediatrics, dermatology, allergies, speech and hearing, etc.
0800 Microbiology
    Biology of microorganisms -- bacteriology, virology, protozoology, fungi, bacterial genetics, yeast, etc.
0900 Physics
    Theories, principles, and laws governing energy and effect of energy on matter--solid state, optics, acoustics, particle, nuclear,atomic, plasma, superconductors, fluid and gas dynamics, thermodynamics, semiconductors, magnetism, quantum mechanics, biophysics, etc.
1000 Zoology
    Study of animals--animal genetics, ornithology, ichthyology, herpetology, entomology, animal ecology, paleontology, cellular physiology, circadian rthythms, animal husbandry, cytology, histology, animal physiology, invertebrate neurophysiology, studies of invertebrates, etc.

MSEF Region II Registration Links

The following links will only be active during the period of January 2, 2012 through February 17, 2012. School ACCESS CODES will be emailed to registered school Coordinators. Any information inputted during the trial period has been erased. The system will automatically close at 5:00 p.m., February 17, 2012. Therefore, no registration can be inputted beyond that date and time.

Participants With Special Needs
    Participants with special needs: Please call (601)979-1603 or TTY (601)979-6919 if you will need special assistance during the fair.  Your advance notice will ensure that assistance and accommodations will be available for you.  These services will be provided for participants with special needs or disabilities.  Parking for these individuals will be available on the North side of the building if the appropriate decal or car tag is displayed.

2012 Exhibitors General Information

Directions to the Lee E. Williams Athletics & Assembly Center (Region II Science Fair Venue)

Judges volunteer their time to evaluate projects of lower and upper fair participants in 10 categories and score the projects awarding the highest number of points to the most outstanding projects. The six highest ranking projects of each category and class are awarded prizes with an opportunity to advance to State (grades 7-12, ranks 1-3 only) and/or International (grades 9-12 only) level competition. Qualified judges should have a Master’s or equivalent degree or a minimum of five (5) years related professional experience to judge projects in the lower fair (grades 1-6) and should have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree or  a minimum of eight (8) years related professional experience to judge projects in the upper fair (grades 7-12).  College juniors, seniors and/or graduate students are eligible to judge in the lower fair upon advisor recommendation and fair official approval.
