The Southern Institute for Mental Health Advocacy, Research and Training (SMHART) was  established on August 1, 2004 with funding received by  the School of Social Work from the Health Resources and Services Administration, Office of Rural Health Policy.  The goal of SMHART is to positively impact three areas in rural and urban mental health services affecting African Americans and other under-represented populations in Mississippi. These areas are research, training, and advocacy.
