Dr. Schooley is a tenured, senior, Associate Professor in the Department of Speech Communication and Theatre at Jackson State University, since the Fall of 1986. From February 2002 through August of 2007, Dr. Schooley served as Acting Chair for the Department. Since 1986, he has acted as director of Drama Studies. Dr. Schooley received his Ph.D. in Oral Interpretation of Literature, Theatre, and Public Address from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Prior to LSU, he earned his Master of Fine Arts Drama and Dance from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. Additionally, he completed a Master of Arts degree in Oral Interpretation and Theatre from Louisiana State University. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
Dr. Schooley's teaching career began at the City High School in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas it was there that the directed Bill Clinton in both his Junior and Senior Class plays. He then moved on to The University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was director set and costume designer, as an Assistant Professor. After seven years, he re-located to LSU where he directed, designed and taught. Nine years later, he moved to Jackson Mississippi and Jackson State University where he continues to teach, direct and design.
During his tenure at Jackson State, Dr. Schooley has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Mississippi Dance Association and later as President of the Association. He is a former General Manager of Opera South of Jackson State. He has been a two term board member for Mississippi Opera. Prior to moving to Mississippi, Dr. Schooley served on the Board of Directors for various arts and community boards of directors in Arkansas and Oklahoma. He is a charter performing member of the Arkansas State Ballet. Over his teaching career, Dr. Schooley has directed over one-hundred productions and designed and/or costumed even more. Schooley continues to be an active member of the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) and the Mississippi Theatre Association (MTA).
Dr. Schooley is most gratified to have introduced countless students to the appreciation of theatre, dance, opera, and musical theatre.
