For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide/When The Rainbow is Enuf, written by American playwright Ntozake Shange, showcases the power of black women. The production addresses social issues like rape, abortion, and acceptance. The action of the play culminates in “a laying on of hands,” where Shange evokes the power of womanhood as the Lady in Red begins the mantra “I found God in myself/ and I loved her/ I loved her fiercely.”
“Overwhelming…It’s joyous and alive, affirmative in the face of despair.”
-Douglas Watt, New York Daily News
“These poems and prose selections are…rich with the author’s special voice: by turns bitter, funny, ironic, and savage; fiercely honest and personal.”
-Martin Gottfried, New York Post

Zooman and the Sign involves the shooting of a little girl outrages an urban middle-class family. As the estranged family tries to deal with their loss and the impact of violence in their community, the angry father and uncle challenge the neighborhood to come forward with evidence as to who might have committed the murder. They post a sign asking for help, but soon understand that none of the neighbors will offer any information about the shooting. After seeing the sign, the killer continues to terrorize and intimidate the neighborhood and forces the family to take unspeakable action.
