Admission to Student Teaching Application Process

The Fall 2021 application deadline has been extended to May 15, 2021.

Candidate Application Process:

  1. Contact/meet with faculty mentor (departmental advisor) to ensure that you qualify for admission to student teaching. During this initial meeting, you should ensure that your faculty mentor completes and signs your Curriculum Sheet reflecting all of your coursework including courses in which you are currently enrolled. Your faculty mentor is responsible for submitting your signed Curriculum Sheet during the application approval process.
  2. You will need to complete, sign, and email the following documents to the Center for Teacher Quality at teacherquality@jsums.edu.
      1. Copy of your PRAXIS II scores (Content Area & Principles of Learning and Teaching [if required in your program]). *Optional Under Covid-19 Waiver
      2. MS Department of Education Code of Ethics Oath [click on link to complete]
      3. Complete the Castle Branch Background Check– University Code JA54 and upload into your account. (If you plan to student teaching in the Jackson Public School District or Hinds County School District, do not complete the Castle Branch check.) Castle Branch Background Check [click on link to complete]
      4. Complete the MS Association of Educators/National Educators Association Student and print documentation of your membership. https://join.nea.org/mississippi/ [click on link to complete]
      5. Secure a professional photograph (headshot) of yourself (it does not have to be taken by a professional photographer).
      6. Each of the aforementioned documents will need to be scanned to a digital format and emailed to teacherquality@jsums.edu.
  1. Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive an email stating whether it has been approved, denied, or pending submission of additional documents.

 Faculty Review Process:

  • Faculty review your advisee’s application.
  • Faculty sign and email the candidate’s Curriculum Sheet on the review form.
  • Faculty review and provide recommendation of one of the following options: Approved, Denied, or Pending for candidates needing to submit additional information or correct information listed in their application.
  • Faculty email  the status to the candidate with copy to teacherquality@jsums.edu.
