Seminars

The JSU Welcome Center hosts free monthly seminars for the JSU family and community. Generally, the seminars are in line with national monthly themes such as Black History Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, etc. The seminars are held from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. and  will emphasize one of the following: self improvement, career development, cultural enhancement, education, or basic training. Guests must RSVP at 601.979.0883 at least one week prior to each seminar. Seating is limited and refreshments are provided.

Door Prize – Ms. Rachel Cowan, Director of the JSU Walter Payton Recreation & Wellness Center, gave a participant a one-month free membership to the center.

February

Feb. 26: Guest Speaker: Mr. Harold Miller (Artist, Painter, Sculptor) from Vicksburg, MS

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Highlight: Mr. Miller talked about his career as an artist and displayed various pieces of his artwork to JSU art majors and other visitors in the Welcome Center.

March

March 26: "Alumni Social Workers Visit JSU"

12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m.

Guest Speakers: Ms. April Jefferson, LMSW, Gentiva Hospice; Ms. Brittany Brumfield Johns, LMSW, Mississippi Families for Kids; and Ms. Candace Carter, Ph.D. student. Refreshments and door prizes.

The speakers enjoyed interacting with our visitors and sharing details about their careers in social work.

April

April 26: Seminar on "Substance Abuse"

12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m.

To celebrate Alcohol Awareness Month, the JSU Welcome Center held a seminar on substance abuse on Friday, April 26, 2013, from noon until 1 p.m. in the Welcome Center. Our guest speaker was Ms. Yolanda Sanderford, director of the Metro Counseling Center, Inc., in Jackson, Miss. Ms. Sanderford talked about the various substance abuse services at the center. This was a free seminar for JSU staff, alumni and friends of JSU. Refreshments and door prizes.

May 22: Seminar on "How to Develop a Business Plan"

12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m.

In honor of National Small Business Month, our guest guest speaker was Mr. Rickey Jones, Business Counselor from the JSU Small Business Development Center in the Mississippi e-Center. Mr. Jones (standing below center) provided tips on "How to Develop a Business Plan." This event was free and open to the public. Refreshments and door prizes.

June 25: Seminar on "Safety in the Home"

12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m.

The Welcome Center celebrated National Safety Month with two guest speakers: Lieutenant Venus Gardner with the Jackson Fire Department; and Officer Stephanie Thomas with the JSU Department of Public Safety. The speakers talked about home and fire safety. This was a free seminar with refreshments and door prizes.

July 18: "Summer Activities" Seminar

12 noon – 1 p.m.

The Welcome Center celebrated summer fun with a seminar on Thursday, July 18, 2013. Local vendors were on site to share information, including dance, recreational parks and summer camps.

August

August 27: "Careers in Art" Seminar

12 noon – 1 p.m.

The JSU Welcome Center celebrated American Art Appreciation Month by hosting a seminar on "Careers in Art" on Tuesday, August 27, 2013. The guest speakers were Mr. Charles Carraway, Chair of the Jackson State University Art Department; and Mr. Jimmy Mumford, professor of graphic design at JSU. The discussion focused on careers in digital media, animation and studio arts.

September

September 24: "Cholesterol Education" Seminar

12 noon – 1 p.m.

To celebrate National Cholesterol Education Month, Ms. Darcel Thigpen, Health Education Specialist for the Jackson Heart Study, talked with guests about healthy eating and exercise to avoid heart disease. Ms. Thigpen provided handouts to all guests and answered questions about healthy lifestyle choices.

October

October 22: "Breast Health Education" Seminar

12 noon to 1 p.m.

The Welcome Center celebrated National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a seminar on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at 12 noon. The guest speaker was Ms. Tracie Wade (left in picture below), Strides Recruiter with the American Cancer Society. She talked about risk factors for breast cancer and distributed handouts to everyone present. Also pictured is Ms. Sheletha Taylor  winner of the "Pink Bag" giveaway – compliments of St. Dominic Women Health Center.

November

November 11: "JSU Honors Veterans and Military Students"

The JSU Welcome Center, Veterans Center, Barber Shop, and Hair Studio  partnered to offer services to Jackson State veterans and military students on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11, 2013. Barber Shop (offered free cuts from 8 a.m. to 12 noon); Hair Studio (offered a 20% discount from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Jan. 28: "Health Awareness Month Seminar" (Note: This seminar was cancelled due to inclement weather. Please join us on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at 12 noon in the Welcome Center).

Join us in the Welcome Center on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at 12:00 noon for the health seminar featuring five of the "Biggest Losers" from the Walter Payton Recreation and Wellness Center. February 26: Black History Month Seminar

12 noon to 1:00 p.m.

In honor of Black History Month, the Welcome Center and the History Department are partnering to present a candid discussion on the award-winning movie, "12 Years A Slave."
