The JSU Welcome Center hosts free monthly seminars for the JSU family and community. Generally, the seminars are in line with national monthly themes such as Black History Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, etc. The seminars are held from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. and will emphasize one of the following: self improvement, career development, cultural enhancement, education, or basic training. Guests must RSVP at 601.979.0883 at least one week prior to each seminar. Seating is limited and refreshments are provided.

Feb. 26: Guest Speaker: Mr. Harold Miller (Artist, Painter, Sculptor) from Vicksburg, MS
12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Highlight: Mr. Miller talked about his career as an artist and displayed various pieces of his artwork to JSU art majors and other visitors in the Welcome Center.

March 26: “Alumni Social Workers Visit JSU”
12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m.
Guest Speakers: Ms. April Jefferson, LMSW, Gentiva Hospice; Ms. Brittany Brumfield Johns, LMSW, Mississippi Families for Kids; and Ms. Candace Carter, Ph.D. student. Refreshments and door prizes.
The speakers enjoyed interacting with our visitors and sharing details about their careers in social work.

April 26: Seminar on “Substance Abuse”

To celebrate Alcohol Awareness Month, the JSU Welcome Center held a seminar on substance abuse on Friday, April 26, 2013, from noon until 1 p.m. in the Welcome Center. Our guest speaker was Ms. Yolanda Sanderford, director of the Metro Counseling Center, Inc., in Jackson, Miss. Ms. Sanderford talked about the various substance abuse services at the center. This was a free seminar for JSU staff, alumni and friends of JSU. Refreshments and door prizes.

May 22: Seminar on “How to Develop a Business Plan”
12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.
In honor of National Small Business Month, our guest guest speaker was Mr. Rickey Jones, Business Counselor from the JSU Small Business Development Center in the Mississippi e-Center. Mr. Jones (standing below center) provided tips on “How to Develop a Business Plan.” This event was free and open to the public. Refreshments and door prizes.

June 25: Seminar on “Safety in the Home”
12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.
How safe are you in your home? Join us in the JSU Welcome Center. We will celebrate National Safety Month with two guest speakers: Lieutenant Venus Gardner with the Jackson Fire Department; and Officer Stephanie Thomas with the JSU Department of Public Safety.
