Research Cores

The primary goal of the Research Cores is to carry out direct research in two of the identified
high-priority minority health disparity areas. The Research Cores are detailed below:

  • Cancer – Directed by
  Project 1:  Effect of V. amygdalina extract on the growth of breast cancer cells in vitro (Ernest Izevbigie, Ph.D. and Carolyn Howard, Ph.D.) 
Rationale: 
To determine whether V. amygdalina extract inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells in vitro.
 
  Project 2: Addressing Cancer Health Disparities through Local Cancer Control Profiling (Mary Lou Gutierrez-Mohamed)
Rationale: 
To begin a systematic, evidenced-based, cancer control process in Mississippi.
 
  • Cardiovascular Disease – Directed by Dr. Daniel Sarpong
  Project 1: Improving the Knowledge of Stroke Symptoms (Mohammad Shahbazi, Ph.D)
Rationale: 
To increase the availability of, and access to, stroke educational materials leading to an increase in knowledge level of stroke symptoms among African Americans in selected counties in Mississippi.
 
  Project 2: Obesity Reduction through Utilization of an Urban Mall for Exercise (Emmanuel O. Keku, M.D.)
Rationale: 
To increase the utilization of the Jackson Medical Mall as an exercise facility in inner-city Jackson.
 
  Project 3: Health Education and Awareness for Life That’s Healthy (Clifton Addison, Ph.D.)
Rationale:
To provide a curriculum based intervention strategy to motivate youth to participate in fitness activity as well as change negative dietary practices.
