Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience
Duration: June '08 - Apr '09
IMTrans launched its Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience (OURE)
program with a call for applications in the spring of 2007. The objectives of the program are to:
- Expand opportunities for a more active form of learning by students,
- Encourage the interaction of undergraduate students with faculty,
- Expand the level of research activity at Jackson State,
- Help recruit superior students into our graduate program,
- Demonstrate that teaching and research are compatible and mutually reinforcing.
The following research/education projects were approved for funding:
Tiger Transit System
The research project will focus upon developing a transit system between Jackson State University's (JSU) four campuses - JSU Main Campus, the Mississippi e-Center, the Jackson Medical mall and the Universities Center and will also consider the planning and policy implications for the extension of such a system to the greater Jackson Metropolitan area.
The researchers will gather data on previous transit systems operated by Jackson State University and will create a survey to indicate the need for a transit system targeting faculty, staff, administrators, and students that will focus on dependency, effects and results of the JSU and JATRAN transit systems. The researchers will also examine the transit systems of the other four-year institutions of higher learning across the southern region of the United States. These examinations will produce insight of how other four-year institutions created, conducted, maintained and funded their systems. The collected data will allow the researchers to determine the need, functionality and financial constraints of operating a transit system between the four campuses of JSU. Based upon the collected data, the researchers will design and layout possible routes, time schedules and budgetary needs for a transit system entitled: T.T.S. (Tiger Transit System) that would best suite the needs of the transportation community in and around the campuses of Jackson State University.
