Introduction

To prepare students academically for college and technologically trained for the workforce of the 21 st century, Jackson State University will host SIMET, Students Investing in Mathematics, Engineering and Technology. SIMET is a two year, year round program on two levels for students in grades 7 th through 11 th. The informal learning program features eight Saturday sessions, during the school year, parent and participants informal workshops, weekly one-hour sessions with college mentors, summer internships and a two-week residential summer camp.

Goals:

  • To increase students knowledge of STEM Careers.
  • To provide academic support for students with course work during the school year.
  • To provide opportunities for students to receive training and certification in a specific area of Information Technology (IT).
  • To provide activities that engage students in IT experiences of the workplace.
  • Encourage students to take advanced mathematics and science courses in high school in preparation to attend a college or university.
  • To provide students with technology skills that will support them academically in high school, in seeking advanced degrees and in the workforce.
  • To acquaint parents with STEM careers and the academic preparation required for those careers.
  • To provide opportunities for students to meet individuals employed in IT careers.
